What older weatherboard needs before any paint goes on
The post-war hardwood weatherboard around Speers Point, Toronto, and Eleebana is excellent timber, and it is why those houses are still standing. It is also unforgiving. Hardwood moves with heat and holds paint badly once the surface has gone chalky, so the prep is most of the job. Board ends draw in water and rot from the cut end inwards. Nail heads back out as the timber moves. Lap joints open up and let water behind the board where you cannot see it. We work through all of that before priming, because a topcoat over unprepared hardwood is money spent twice.
Repair or replace a board
Not every damaged board needs replacing. Sound timber with surface damage can be filled and primed. Where the rot has gone through, replacement is the honest answer and we will show you which boards those are rather than filling over them.
Sealing the joints properly
Flexible sealant at lap joints and window surrounds keeps water out while still allowing the boards to move. Rigid filler in the same place cracks within a year, which is why so many repaints fail at exactly those points.
