What a paint day looks like

Here is how one day on site runs.

We turn up in the morning and park where we agreed. The first hour is set up. We lay drop sheets, tape the edges, and move what needs to move. Nothing gets painted until the room is safe.

Next comes prep. This is the slow part, and it is the part that makes a coat last. We fill holes, sand rough spots, and wipe the dust off. On older walls this can take most of a day on its own.

Then the paint goes on. Most walls take two coats. The first coat has to dry before the second can go on. That wait is set by the paint, not by us, so we plan the day around it.

We stop about half an hour before the end of the day. Brushes get washed. Sheets get folded or left flat if we are back in the same room. Tools go back in the van or in one spot you agree to.

You will hear us. Sanding is the loud part. Music stays off unless you say you do not mind. If you work from home, tell us which room you are in and we will start at the far end.

Dust is part of prep, but most of it can be caught. We tape off doorways and use a vacuum on the sander where we can. The room will still need a wipe when we finish.

Living at home while we paint

You do not have to move out. Most of our jobs are done with people still living there.

We work room by room. That way you always keep a kitchen and a bathroom you can use. We agree the order with you on day one, not on the fly.

Beds are the thing to plan for. A room that gets painted in the day is fine to sleep in that night if we use a low smell paint. If the smell bothers you, we can leave that room until last.

Paint smell fades fastest with air moving through. We open windows while we work and shut them before we go. In winter it takes longer to clear, so we swap to a low smell tin where we can.

Kids and pets need a plan. Wet walls are easy to lean on. We keep doors shut and gates closed. If your dog is a bolter, the safest thing is a day out.

We move couches, beds and tables. We do not move fish tanks, pianos or very heavy items. We leave glass and art to you. Tell us early and we will work around it.

Your things stay yours. We do not open drawers or cupboards unless you ask us to paint inside them.

Inside jobs and outside jobs

The two run in different ways. That changes how we book you in.

Inside work is steady. Rain does not stop it. We can hold a start date with more ease. The job runs to plan more often than not.

Outside work waits on weather. Paint needs a dry surface and a dry stretch after it goes on. A wet week can push a job back, and there is nothing we can do to rush it.

We watch the weather and we tell you early if a day looks bad. It is better to lose a day than to put a coat on damp timber and watch it fail in a year. Our guide on how weather affects outside painting goes into more detail.

Heat matters too. On very hot days paint can dry too fast and leave marks. We start early and work in the shade, moving around the house as the sun moves.

Height changes the setup. A single storey is ladders. A second storey may need scaffold, which takes a day to put up and a day to take down. We tell you at quote time if your place needs it.

Both can run at once on bigger jobs. One crew inside, one out. That shortens the whole job, though it does mean more people on site for a few days.

After we finish

The job is not done when the last coat goes on.

We walk the whole job with you. Bring a fresh pair of eyes and take your time. Look at the edges, the corners, and the spots near light switches. Those are where marks hide.

If you spot something, say so there and then. We fix it while we are still set up. That is far easier than coming back next week.

We leave you the paint that is left. Each tin gets a label with the colour name and which room it went in. Keep it in a dry spot. It is what you will reach for when a chair scuffs a wall.

We take our rubbish with us. Old sheets, tape, empty tins and dust all leave in the van.

If a fault shows up later, call us. Our work has a five year warranty on the trade work we do. We would rather hear about a fault than have you live with it.

Picking a colour without regret

Colour is the part most people get stuck on. Here is how to make it easier.

Start with what stays. Your roof, your bricks and your floor are not changing. Pick a wall colour that sits well with those, not against them.

Buy a test pot. Paint a big patch, not a small one. A tiny square tells you very little.

Look at it at three times of day. Morning light is cool. Midday is harsh. Evening is warm. A white that looks clean at noon can look grey at dusk.

Check it on more than one wall. A shaded wall reads much darker than a sunny one, even with the same tin.

Dark shades hold heat. On a west wall in summer that matters. They also show chalk and fade faster than pale ones.

How long a coat should last

A good coat is not forever, but it should last a long time.

Inside walls in a quiet room can go ten years or more. Halls, kids rooms and kitchens wear faster because hands and steam get at them.

Outside is harder. Near the sea, salt and sun cut the life of a coat. Five to eight years is a fair guess for a wall that gets weather.

Shaded south walls last longer than sunny west ones. It is normal for one side of a house to need work before the rest.

Prep drives most of this. A coat put on a clean, sound, primed wall lasts far longer than the same paint rushed on over chalk.

A wash once a year helps. Salt and grime hold moisture against the wall, and that is what lifts paint at the edges.

Small jobs we take

Not every job is a whole house. We take small ones too.

One room is a normal job for us. So is one wall. A feature wall in a lounge can often be done in a day.

Front doors, gates and fences are quick wins. They are the first thing people see, and they take the most weather.

Gutters, fascia and trim can be done on their own. You do not need to repaint the whole house to tidy up the edges.

Rental turnovers are common. Between tenants there is often a tight window, and we work to it.

Selling? A tidy coat in the main rooms lifts how a place shows in photos. We can do just the rooms the camera sees.
