What makes painting in Wallsend different?
The age of the housing. Wallsend started as a mining town, and it kept its own centre when Newcastle grew around it. So the old streets near the village still hold weatherboard cottages and federation homes. Move out towards Maryland and Fletcher and you are into newer estates instead.
That spread matters when we quote. A 1920s cottage and a 2015 render home need different prep, different primers and different amounts of time. We check the home on site before we price it, rather than working off a square-metre rate.
Why is salt not the main issue here?
Wallsend sits about ten kilometres back from the surf. So it misses the daily salt spray that wears down paint in Merewether or Nelson Bay. The wear here comes from heat and sun instead.
Walls swell through summer and shrink on cold nights. Over years that opens cracks, lifts edges and pulls old paint off render. So the answer is good crack repair and a paint that stays flexible. A marine-grade system would be money spent on the wrong problem.
How do we prepare older Wallsend homes?
Slowly. An older cottage can carry many layers of paint, some of it a century old. We wash the surface, scrape back what is loose, then fill and sand before any primer goes on. Boards that have gone soft get checked for damage first.
Homes built before 1970 may also carry lead paint. That is normal for the era and it is only a risk when the surface is disturbed. So it changes how we sand and contain the work, not whether the job can go ahead. We ask the age of the home before we start.
