How Weather Affects Exterior Painting in Coastal NSW

If you live in Newcastle, the Hunter, or Lake Macquarie, you know the weather can change in a matter of hours. When it comes to exterior painting, weather isn't just an inconvenience—it completely dictates success. Here is how different weather factors affect paint application and curing.

1. Rain and Unexpected Showers

Moisture is the natural enemy of fresh paint. If rain hits a freshly painted exterior wall before the paint has "skinned over" or partially cured, it can wash the paint directly off the siding. This creates a streaky mess that requires significant sanding and reworking to fix. Professional painters rely on hyper-localized forecasts and will delay topcoats if a sudden downpour is likely.

2. Extreme Heat and Direct Sun

In the height of an NSW summer, direct sunlight can heat a dark-colored wall or metal roof to temperatures far exceeding the ambient air. If paint is applied to a surface that is too hot, the solvents (or water, in acrylics) flash off instantly.
