Signs Your House Needs Repainting (and How Often to Repaint)
The signs to look for, how often to repaint a house in Australia, and why salt air in Newcastle shortens the cycle.
Most Australian homes need repainting outside every 7 to 10 years, and inside every 5 to 10 years. In coastal Newcastle, salt air can cut that to 5 to 7 years. So check your walls for chalking, fading, cracking, lifting paint, gaps, or mould. One sign is often just a patch repair. Two or more across the same wall usually means the coating is spent, and it is time to repaint.
How often should you repaint a house in Australia?
It depends on the surface, the paint, and how much weather the wall takes. Here are the ranges we see across Newcastle homes.
- Weatherboard (outside): 6 to 10 years. Timber moves, so joints open first.
- Render or masonry (outside): 8 to 12 years. Tough, but it chalks in the sun.
- Fibro or cladding (outside): 7 to 10 years.
- Within 2km of the coast: knock 2 to 3 years off any of the above.
- Inside walls: 5 to 10 years. Kitchens, halls, and kids' rooms wear fastest.
- Trims and doors: 4 to 7 years. They take the most knocks and sun.
So use these as a guide, not a rule. A north-facing wall in full sun will always go before a sheltered south wall on the same house.
The signs your house needs repainting
Walk the outside of your home on a clear day. Then look for these six signs.
- Chalking. Rub the wall with your hand. A powdery residue means the binder has broken down.
- Fading. Compare a sunny wall with a sheltered one. A clear colour gap means the film is tired.
- Cracking or crazing. Fine lines let water in behind the coat.
- Peeling or flaking. Paint lifting at edges, joints, or sills means adhesion has failed.
- Gaps and bare timber. Open joints around windows are an entry point for water.
- Mould or dark staining. Common on shaded, damp walls in coastal suburbs.
If paint is already lifting, read our guide on why paint peels and how to fix it, which covers the causes and the repair.

Why coastal Newcastle homes repaint sooner
Salt air is the reason. Fine salt crystals settle on walls and hold moisture against the paint film. That moisture works under the coat and breaks the bond. Add strong UV and the coating ages faster than it would inland.
So homes near the water need a proper coastal system, not just a fresh colour. Our guide to surface preparation for coastal painting in Newcastle explains the wash, prime, and coat steps that make it last. Regular washing helps too, as we cover in why regular cleaning prolongs paint.
Can you wait another year?
Sometimes, yes. If the paint is only faded and still sound, you can usually wait. But if bare timber or render is showing, do not wait. Once water gets in, you are paying for repairs as well as paint.
So the cheapest repaint is the one done just before the coating fails. Waiting adds prep, and prep is the biggest cost driver. See our exterior painting cost guide for Newcastle for current ranges.
What we check on an inspection
We are a licensed local team with 5 years of coastal work and NSW Trade Licence 492257C. First, we test the wall for chalking and adhesion. Next, we check joints, sills, and eaves for water entry. Then, we tell you honestly whether you can wait a season or should book now. So you get a straight answer, not a sales pitch.
Not sure if it is time?
Book a free on-site inspection. We will check the surface, tell you how long it has left, and give you a clear written price if it is due.
