Paint Sheen Levels Explained: Matt to Gloss
A clear guide to paint sheen levels — matt, low-sheen, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss — and which one suits each room and surface in your home.
Paint sheen is how much light a dried coating reflects. The scale runs from matt through low-sheen and satin, up to semi-gloss and gloss. Lower sheens look soft and hide flaws. Higher sheens resist scuffs and wipe clean more easily. So the right sheen depends on the room and how hard it is used. This guide compares each level and shows where it belongs. It is part of our wider paint types and finishes guide.
How does the sheen scale work?
Think of sheen as a trade-off between looks and toughness. Lower sheens scatter light, so they feel soft and forgiving on imperfect walls. Higher sheens reflect light, so they look crisp and clean more easily. However, that shine also shows every bump. So each step up the scale gains durability but demands better prep.
- Matt. Almost no shine. Hides flaws best, but is the hardest to wipe clean.
- Low-sheen. A soft glow with better washability. The standard wall finish.
- Satin. A gentle sheen that cleans easily. Great for busy rooms.
- Semi-gloss. A harder, shinier film for trims, doors, and wet areas.
- Gloss. The shiniest and toughest. Best on detailed feature surfaces.

Which sheen suits each room and surface?
Use this quick reference to match sheen to surface. It reflects what we specify on most Newcastle homes, indoors and out.
| Surface | Best sheen | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ceilings | Matt / flat | Hides flaws, no glare |
| Bedroom & living walls | Low-sheen | Soft look, still washable |
| Hallways & kids' rooms | Satin | Wipes clean in high traffic |
| Bathrooms & kitchens | Satin / semi-gloss | Resists moisture and stains |
| Trims & doors | Semi-gloss | Hard, scuff-resistant film |
| Front door & metal | Gloss | Maximum durability and shine |
Does sheen matter more on the coast?
Yes, especially outdoors. Coastal homes face salt, moisture, and strong sun. So a slightly higher sheen helps exterior walls and trims shed water and stay cleaner. Semi-gloss on exterior trims resists mould and salt better than a flat finish.
